A Look At 90 Degree Days In Seattle-Bellevue (SeaTac Airport)

Tomorrow It may hit 90 degrees in Seattle. In honor of that, let’s look at a history (and snapshot) of official 90 degree days in Seattle-Bellevue (SeaTac Airport)!

Fun Fact

The National Weather Service provides downloadable data for every single day’s officially recorded weather in Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma (by way of SeaTac Airport) dating back to January 1st 1948. So, downloading this data into Excel and using formulas, I could pull up a lot of fun facts about 90 degree days in Seattle and Bellevue within a few minutes (the bulk of the hour I took writing this was in the actual writing, not the analysis).

In Summary

About 1% of the days hit 90 degrees – 274 total since 1948. The earliest date was mid-May (May 17) and the latest date is late September (September 22nd).  The most likely time to hit 90 degrees is unsurprisingly July, but with August also giving July a run for its money. When it hits 90 degrees, on average it reaches 93. There have been 72 days that were soooooooooo close to 90 degrees – where it hit 89 then stopped.

An Overview of 90-degree days in Seattle dating back to 1948
By Month And Decade

Looking at how many 90 degree days there are for every single month of every single year would probably be too much for busy people like us. So I compartmentalized it by month and decade instead to create an at-a-glance look at how 90 degree days look over time. Here it is:

What stands out to me are the 2010s. A very hot decade in Seattle! This doesn’t even take into account the 100 degree days we had at the end of the 2000s, when it hit 103 in July 2009.

FINAL THOUGHT

Anyway, there are parts of the world where no one bats an eye at 90 degree days. Thankfully in Seattle 90 degrees is a rare and therefore memorable occurrence that happens only 1% of the time. Of course, the price we pay for fewer 90 degree days are the gray days in the winter, but for now the gray days of winter seem like a million years away 🙂
